Clive was a British Army officer and statesman, born in England. He is known for his role in the British conquest of Bengal, for which the Nawab of Bengal, Mir Jafar, awarded Clive the title of 52nd Jagirdar of Bardhaman and the "Sword of Honour". After the Battle of Plassey, he was made a member of the council at Murshidabad. Clive was also one of the founders of the Calcutta, as well as the founder of the city of Buckingham in what is today the state of Virginia, USA. He was also known as a talented writer, and one of the first Englishmen to produce a major historical work in the Bengali language.
